I saw a traffic light in the sky. No really, I did.

29 03 2007

Evening.

Today was a bad day weather wise. My 100% waterproof trousers let me down, big style. I wouldn’t even say 10% waterproofness.

Nevermind. It’s Scotland.

Yesterday however was a different matter. I was working late, and on the way home the sun was setting around 7:15. As I got to the bridge the sun was BRIGHT RED. When I say red, I mean traffic light red. It was light a big traffic light in the sky. What made it even more stunning was the various cloudage that happened in front of it, jet black it was. And then, to heighten the whole experience, when I got on the bridge, near the middle, the sun cast a gentle red light over the waves as they lapped around the wee lighthouse thats in the middle of the Forth.

Amazing.

Anyway, today I had to go commando as I forgot a change of everything. Dang.

I have been looking in to getting a helmet cam for my big trip to France soon. I was checking out www.dogcamsports.co.uk, who have a lot of really cool looking stuff, however their suction mounts look a bit sus…they say they have tested them up to 180mph, but I know I wouldn’t feel confident with them. I would have to gaffa tape, or maybe velcro for a bit of extra security.

Anyway, not only do I need a camera, but I need either a camcorder or dogcams do a portable hard drive thingy…looks smart as feck but it’s big bucks.

We’ll see.

I get a new helmet this weekend. A Shoei Raid II. It fits like a glove and feels amazing. It’ll be nice not having a headache every day and a big red blob on my forehead evertime I wear the helmet.

Not that I’m vain, but it cramps your style if you get off your bike, take off your helmet to reveal extreme bed face and a big red smudge on your forehead.

My wonderful lady will be joining me in the bike gear excitement as we look to get her kitted up for the big jaunt to France.

OOO!

I’ll let you know how it goes…

Ass handed.

25 03 2007

Well well well.

Valentino looked a bit worried before the race…but right out the gate he made his mark. Dani boy tried his best to keep up but The Doctor was on form and unbreakable. By lap 20ish Vale was 3 seconds in front. Dani boy was pushing so hard he even ran on to the dirt, then did a 20ft wheelspin. Amazing.

A show of true skill and complete control. Dani boy then colin edwards. Fiat Yamaha had a good weekend!

After the race we saw Valentino stop halfway around the track, get off his bike, and as the camera panned round, we saw a set of human skittles. Rossi then bowled an invisible ball to get himself a strike. Hilarious stuff and Valentino on form.

Cut back to the winners paddock and we see Dani boy arrive alone. He has time to get off his bike, take off his helmet and chat to his pit crew for a few minutes before Colin gets in to the paddock. We saw Dani and Colin getting interviewed by the time Vale got back to the pits, riding side saddle and waving to the crowd. As colin finished his sentence, we see Vale in the background surfing on his bike, while his crew deck it. He then jumps on to Colin and they hug.

My brother said, and it’s true no matter which way you look at it; “Now that’s a team. You would never see Dani and Nicky doing that.”

Maybe that’s what makes the Fiat Yamaha team so good. Yes you have Wonderboy Valentino, but you have Colin as well, who is superb, funny and a dedicated team mate to Valentino. The choice to keep him at Fiat Yamaha was a good one.

Anyway, the fact of the matter is, Valentino showed them all who was boss today, and long may it continue. Meanwhile Nicky “The Champ” Hayden was struggling to get to grips with his bike. Nevermind…

After the MotoGP had finished, I watched the 125cc start on the Sky+. It was probably one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

The pole position boy (I forget his name) Faubel? Not sure. Anyway, they exit from the pits and head around the track to line up. All the pack gets back to the grid, and then the camera cuts to pole boy, riding along at 2mph….he then proceeds to push his bike along with his left leg, like its a giant skateboard. It is such a shame as the rules state that he can’t get assistance from anyone and he has to get back to the pits in order to get his other bike. We cut back to the grid and all the pack are ready to go. A few minutes later pole boy is still skateboarding his way to the pits! So so so funny.

He then has to get on his new bike, wait for the pack to do a warm up lap and then start from the back of the pack…in 35th place. BUMMER.

Shame.

Anyway, after the GP had finished, I left my brothers and went for a ride. I intended to just go west and have a short ride, but I ended up getting back at 5..after I had left my bros at 2.

It was the best ride out I’ve had yet! It was sunny and warm(ish) and it was great. I headed out past Dollar, on to Stirling, then up to Bridge of Allan, Dunblane, then back through Stirling and Yetts o Muchart, then up to Clackmannanshire, through the forest and up the hills, which then lead down to Crieff. A boy in his Civic Type R tried to keep up but the bends were too much for his cager outfit to handle. The views from the top of the hill looking down was spectacular! The sun was setting and the light was warm. It was kind of misty, you know the smoggy that isn’t smog kind of stuff. Breathtaking views, coupled with the noise and smell of a bike make for excellent entertainment!

Then I got to Crieff I headed east, back to Perth and up to Bridge of Earn.

An old boy in his Saab Convertible was being an idiot and not indicating….so as I joined the road leading to my village, I blasted past him, and a bloke on a superbike blasted past me! I was looking at him ripping down the long straight when another boy tore past me…I crapped myself. Then quickly followed another boy, doing at least 150mph. What a noise!! I had a lot of respect for those boys and their fast bikes until we got to a windy section just before my village.

They were overtaking on blind bends and making the cars swerve and brake and generally making their life a misery.

I lost all respect for them in an instant. No wonder bikers get the death wish reputation, when you have idiots on their superbikes. Yes, go fast, and yes enjoy bends. But don’t make other peoples life a mess, and don’t, whatever you do, put other peoples life in risk because of your ignorance to other road users.

Anyway, I got home, kind of disappointed after my glorious ride, because of the last minute spoil sports.

What a fantastic ride and my confidence is ever increasing.

My tires were roasting when I got back!!

Back to work tomorrow though….Sob.
Istanbul is 4 weeks away!! Dang. Nevermind.

Rossi and his amazing technicolour dream bike

24 03 2007

So the first round is already over, but tomorrow starts the 2nd.

I remember the front line; Rossi, Edwards and Stoner, aka Casey Crasher. Both me and my brother thought, Rossi has this. But then again, we hadn’t seen the Ducati in a race yet.

The power from the Duc was earth shattering. Lap after lap the wonderboy Vale would catch up with Stoner, and lap after lap Stoner would lose him on the straight. Not just lose him…he would bend him over and show him whos boss. It was a complete shock to the system and a difficult one to imagine. Every corner, we were thinking, Stoner is going to lose it and take Vale with him…but he kept his nerve, his grip and his tactic.

It was really amazing watching the live telemetry at the bottom of the screen. It had Stoner’s and Rossi’s throttle and brake levels. Coming up to a corner Vale would ease off the gas, apply the brakes gently and let his bike coast around the corner, with a little help from his right hand. Then a little more upon exit. A truly mastered technique and smooth as a babies bum, you can see why Valentino is the king of all GP kings. The confidence in his front end is just boggling. The commentators mentioned that recently, upon questioning his cornering skill, he simply replied, “the front tire is my friend.” Beautiful…

Stoner’s telemetry was PIN THROTTLE, OFF, PIN BRAKE, OFF, PIN THROTTLE…no messing and utter confidence in nothing but the traction control of his Ducati.

But no matter how you try to spin it, that Casey boy’s got talent. He may not be as cool, or as smooth as the vet Vale, but he sure does have the fastest bike in the GP.

Enter Estoril, Vale’s favorite track. Dani boy has pole with The Doctor right beside him…this race will be a belter.

Bring on the race!

Reserve…whatever

18 03 2007

I forgot to say this in my last post.

I was reading my earlier stuff there the now about how the good folks at Yamaha put a reserve light on and a F-trip meter….

Well hows about this!? The Reserve light comes on at 80 miles…its meant to come on when the fuel gets to 3.5 liters. At 80 miles I went to the Station and filled it up full. I put in 9 liters of unleaded….its a 15l tank…15-9=6…….EH!?

When the reserve light comes on, I still have 6 liters in my tank….

Nice one Yamaha.

I can now get 130 miles out my tank easily.

BOOOOO
